The Avengers assemble some big numbers at the weekend box office, May 4-6, 2012

Weekend Box Office Results for May 4-6, 2012
The Avengers exceeded even the most optimistic expectations, pulling in an unbelievable $200M - more than $46,000 per theater. That was about 80% of the movie market this weekend. Although the superhero flick failed to beat Harry Potter's opening day, it simply crushed the old Saturday and Sunday records to become the first film ever to reach $200M in three days. (The previous record was five days. The Hunger Games required eight.)

And the indications are that The Avengers will not slow down soon. The CinemaScore was A+.

In other news, Box Office Mojo noted:

"While The Avengers was the only new nationwide release this weekend, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel provided great counterprogramming and played well in limited release. The movie ranked 15th for the weekend with an estimated $750,000 from just 27 locations, which translates to a strong $27,778 per-theater average. This kind of pleasant, well-reviewed adult comedy is right in distributor Fox Searchlight's wheelhouse, and it should be able to successfully expand over the next few weeks."
