Watch Japanese superstar pitcher-turned-DH Shohei Ohtani win the HR Derby

Watch Japanese superstar pitcher-turned-DH Shohei Ohtani win the HR Derby

He won by hitting three homers.

One of them nearly 280 feet!

(I didn't make up the total. The score was 3-2 in the finals, and his swings looked pretty pathetic. Lots of ground balls, pop-ups and even some misses (check out the video). I think I could have won this - and not when I was young, but NOW, at age 67.)

"While it's strange for a pitcher to take part, it's not surprising that Ohtani won. In only 130 at-bats this season, the two-way player has hit .331/.444/.631 with 10 home runs. Of course, on the mound, he has a 2.03 ERA and has struck out 140 batters in 115 innings -- even setting a Japanese velocity record along the way -- so this isn't some back of the rotation-type hurler."

I was going to make a joke about his record-setting fastball going nearly 80 miles per hour, but in fact he tossed it 101.2, which is some serious heat.
