The man may get some electoral votes. (Utah gets six.)
As of Wednesday: McMullin 31, Trump 27, Clinton 24
"McMullin draws his strongest support from young people, ages 18-34. He is winning 36% of their vote while Trump and Clinton each get 22%."
As some have pointed out, McMullin could become President in one scenario. If the electoral vote were to end up (for example) Clinton 268, Trump 264, McMullin 6, no candidate would get the 270 required to elect. In that case, the election would be decided by the Republican-controlled House among the top three . (Each state gets a single vote.) The Republicans in that body might well decide to go with a mainstream Republican like McMullin rather than an unpredictable loose cannon like Trump.
It gets crazier. If the same result happens in the Vice-Presidential race, then the Democrat-controlled Senate elects the vice-president from among the top two candidates. That would be Tim Kaine.
But it gets crazier still. If there is a deadlock in the House, which could happen if the Republicans split their votes between McMullin and Trump, then Tim Kaine would be acting President until the House resolves the deadlock, which could be never.
Even that is not the end to the craziness. What happens if the House can't reach a decision, the Senate chooses Kaine, and Kaine dies? In that case, I could become President, as could any of you. The 20th Amendment reads: "If a President shall not have been chosen before the time fixed for the beginning of his term, or if the President elect shall have failed to qualify, then the Vice President elect shall act as President until a President shall have qualified; and the Congress may by law provide for the case wherein neither a President elect nor a Vice President shall have qualified, declaring who shall then act as President, or the manner in which one who is to act shall be selected, and such person shall act accordingly until a President or Vice President shall have qualified."
That's right. The Scoopy presidency is only a few bribed officials and a Tim Kaine heart attack away from reality. (Thanks to my campaign manager for the bumper sticker below. Click to enlarge.)
Note also, that in that case, the specific case where they could select me, the Congress could also select Donald Trump, if they chose to do so, even if he lost convincingly in all previous steps!
