'First detection of an atmosphere' on Earth-like planet announced

I'm not sure I agree with that. I would call it the second such detection. Venus is an Earth-like planet (.8 of Earth's size), is in the habitable zone, and has an atmosphere. It happens to be a poisonous atmosphere, but it is an atmosphere.

Which probably means we shouldn't get too excited about finding an atmosphere until we figure out what it consists of.

  1. It was also announced in the last few days that Mars can't be made habitable because it doesn't have any carbon dioxide, which means it can't be terraformed as had been hoped by some.

  2. Sometimes I'm one of those, as when I see that the latest Fast and Furious movie made $45 million in the U.S (and Canada) in its first day of release, I just want to get off this planet as quickly as possible.
