A timeline of baseball players being declared 'the next Babe Ruth'
Missing from the list: Clint Hartung, the Hondo Hurricane, a gigantic guy for his generation (6'5", 210) who was supposed to be Ruth's equal at the plate and on the mound. For a brief moment in time in 1947, it looked as if he might be for real. Pitching and playing some left field, he batted .309 with power in that rookie year, and was 9-7 on the mound. Sadly for Clint and the Giants, he had no follow-up. Not only did he fail to improve, but he got significantly worse. He was never again above .500 as a pitcher, and he was below .220 as a hitter in four subsequent seasons.
