Citizen Kane II - the great SNL skit written by Michael O'Donoghue

Citizen Kane II - the great SNL skit written by Michael O'Donoghue

Mr. Mike was one of the three most influential voices in the first days of the National Lampoon, and the first head writer of SNL. He also wrote Scrooged, and created the famous Star Trek spoof on SNL. He was arguably the last great comedy genius in America.

Mr. Mike died at 54. One of the other driving forces behind the Lampoon, Doug Kenney, only made it to 33, but managed to co-write Animal House and Caddyshack before falling or jumping off a cliff in Hawaii. The third contributor, also a brilliant wit, was a more sensible adult named Henry Beard, who is still alive and kickin'.

Netflix is supposedly creating a film about the founding of the Lampoon. Tom Lennon will play Mr. Mike. Will Forte is Doug Kenney, and Domhnall Gleeson (Brendan's son) plays Henry Beard. IMDb still lists no release date.

  1. fave Mr. Mike quote -

"It takes a big man to laugh at himself.
It takes a bigger man to laugh at that man."

    1. Similar to my favorite: "Is not part of greatness the ability of a man to laugh, not only at himself, but, more importantly, at others?"

From his intro to The Churchill Wit.

  2. When will they film "Bored of the Rings"?

  3. Also good -
"Making people laugh is the lowest form of humor."
