Houston officials were warned they had a problem — they didn't listen

"When presented with sweeping evidence in 2016 that Houston was a 'sitting duck' for the next big hurricane, the former head of the Harris County Flood Control District dismissed the report, saying scientists 'have an agenda' and that 'their agenda to protect the environment overrides common sense.'"

  1. There's two sides to this. Yes, the scientist was right. But, this would have been catastrophic anyway. No storm this big has ever hit the continent, let alone Houston. You can't dump trillions of gallons of water on anything and escape flooding.

Would it have been better if they'd been more careful with the grasslands? Maybe. But only by degrees.

It also must be said that the scientists offered one solution: just stop growing. Can you think of a single city that's going to go for that fix based on a maybe?

  2. Yup. Nothing would have been different in this case if they had totally bought into the program.

    But consider it a parable.
