Supporters defend Roy Moore: “Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter”

Supporters defend Roy Moore: “Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter”

Oh, well, everything is OK then.

To be fair, some of these charges are unimportant. In three of the four cases, he was about 30 years old when he asked teens out on dates, but he was a single man, the women were legal adults at the time, and he was totally respectful of them. “Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.”

The fourth charge is troubling, however. She was 14, legally a child, and there was more than just kissing, although in each of their encounters Moore always respected her requests to stop or to go home. This would have been perfectly normal courtship if she had been 24, but the fact remains that she was 14. Here is the original story in the WaPo.

UPDATE: Bill Maher and Steven Colbert ridiculed this analogy because, according to them, Joseph and Mary never had sex. While the perpetual virginity of Mary has been standard Catholic dogma since the third century, Nonconformist Protestants insist that Mary and Joseph had marital relations and children after the birth of Jesus. The words of the bible support the latter position rather than the ancient Catholic dogma. Matthew 1:25 states that Joseph had no marital relations with Mary "until" (ἕως οὗ ) she had borne Jesus. The new English version says,"When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son." Many Christians also believe that Mary bore more children after Jesus.

  1. Presumably Joseph left the band, leaving Richard and Karen to go on to stardom, in order to support the family.

  3. I can understand why people are suspicious though. These rumors have been around since 1979, and they suddenly surface in the national media right after Moore wins the Republican nomination. Sometimes you wonder if these stories are timed to inflict the maximum political damage.

  4. Apparently there is also no mention in the Bible of Mary's age.
