Adam Rippon Is U.S.'s First Openly Gay Man To Qualify For Winter Olympics

Yeah, I'm sure there's never been a gay figure skater before, so this is a major breakthrough. That Johnny Weir was a rugged Marlboro Man.

I guess the key word is "openly." Weir didn't admit he was gay until after the 2010 games, and didn't return in 2014. Poor ol' Brian Boitano, competing in a very different world, couldn't or didn't come out until he was 50ish.

It will be a better time to live in when we don't see headlines like this, about the first openly gay, or first black, or first Asian or whatever, and sports stories are about the actual sport.
