I knew almost all of these, but Reginald Kenneth Dwight surprised me.

  4. I remember reading a story in one of my undergraduate history books back in the day about this. It was probably in one of the editions of Lawrence Stone's "Crisis of the Aristocracy" about the great increase in new knighthoods and peerages granted under James I devalued the status of older noble families, whose incomes were getting hammered by the high long term inflation stemming from Spain's pouring Latin American silver and gold into Europe.

    What's supposed to have happened is that King James was knighting a Welshman with a long traditional name that was unpronounceable to a native English speaker. The King dubbed him and then said "Arise, Sir Call-Yourself-What-You-Will".
