Russian state TV warns Trump to ‘do what we say’ if you want ‘support in the elections’

“Russian state TV warns Trump to ‘do what we say’ if you want ‘support in the elections’”

This is not The Onion. This one is real.

But please note that the headline is totally misleading as a representation of the article’s content. This was not an official pronouncement from the Kremlin as conveyed by state TV. It was rather the opinion of a professor, as expressed in a panel discussion on state TV.

  1. If it had been an official Kremlin proclamation it would have been consistent with Putin’s goals, if a bit overt.

Most experts seem to agree that Putin supported Trump because he wants to sow discord in the U.S. He never expected Trump to win. What he wanted was for Trump’s supporters to feel that the election was stolen from him so that they would grow increasingly resentful and believe Hillary was an illegitimate president. Then Trump went and fooled us all by winning. But that also worked for Putin because Hillary’s supporters believe Trump is an illegitimate president and with significantly more reason to feel that way.

Now comes the mid-terms. The last thing Putin wants is for the GOP to retain control of both the House and the Senate. If the Dems take the House (or the Senate), as seems likely, they will be able to hold hearings and compel testimony and generally make life even more miserable for Trump than the GOP did for Obama. Nothing Russia could do covertly would motivate Dems to go to the polls in November as much as Putin publicly scolding Trump to behave or risk losing Russia’s support. That is probably why RawStory published such a misleading headline in the first place.

Which leads us to one irrefutable conclusion. If we want to frustrate Putin and send him a message to stop meddling in our elections we MUST vote for Republican House and Senate candidates this November. As far as I can see, there is no other way…

    1. Are you joking? I sure hope so. Because if you are serious, your thinking is incomprehensible to me. The Republicans have been the prime sowers of dissension in the United States for the past 25-30 years – at least since the election of Bill Clinton and the travesty of the attempt to impeach him. Voting for them now, after they have essentially betrayed the United States to gain power, is unthinkable, unless you believe many, many lies.

      1. Of course, I was joking. About the last paragraph at least. Not that I don’t want people to vote Republican in the midterms. But I don’t actually think my conclusion was irrefutable. My tongue was pretty firmly in my cheek there. Though I do stand by my analysis. I think Putin would be quite disappointed if the Dems fail to take the House. I think the GOP is more likely than not to hold on to the Senate simply because of the number of seats the Dems have to defend. Which is fine by me because the one area I believe Trump has excelled in as president is judicial nominations. If the GOP can only hold on to one house of Congress, I’d much rather it be the Senate.

  2. Raw Story’s problem is exactly what their name implies. They take only the headlines and run them as if they are the facts, without verifying what the story or article might be about. Thank you, Scoop, for pointing out that the article and the headline do not match.
