Tales of our wacky commander-in-chief

“Trump thought the military’s top officer made $5 million a year”

“When Kelly asked Trump how much he thought the Joint Chiefs chairman earns, the president responded with a guess of $5 million. The post actually pays less than $200,000. According to the report, when corrected by Kelly, Trump suggested that Gen. Joseph Dunford, the current chairman of the Joint Chiefs, should get a large raise and noted how many stars he had on his uniform.”

OK, two hundred grand isn’t that Trumpian, but there are plenty of perks. For example, each one of those stars can be traded in for a free foot-long at participating Subways, excluding premium sandwiches and double-meat upgrades.

Offer not valid in Alaska or Hawaii.

(This anecdote leads me to believe that Trump must not know his own salary, which is $400,000. Surely he doesn’t think that a military officer would make more than his commander in chief? No. Never mind. He’s not capable of a thought that complex.)

  1. He likely thinks like the civilian business magnate he is. The position of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in the civilian world would likely draw in the neighborhood of $5M, so while it is currently in vogue to make fun of everything our President says and does, he’s not being obtuse or ignorant, he is simply being what he is – a businessman.

    1. He is being VERY obtuse.

Once again, here is why: the chairman of the joint chiefs reports to the commander-in-chief, who makes $400,000, so Trump is certainly being obtuse about “business” practices unless he was paying some of his employees more than ten times as much as his own salary. If he was, it certainly would explain all those bankruptcies!

Since the presidency is the highest government position, then obviously the general must have been making less than $400,000, just as Trump’s civilian employees were presumably making less than he was making as the head of his company.

But … as I pointed out, to make that kind of deduction would require logical thinking, which appears to be something far, far beyond his grasp.

    1. Y’all keep bringing this up. The government employees that travel with ANY President have to stay SOMEwhere. And the government has to pay for it. As it turns out, Trump likes to stay in his properties and therefore his entourage also has to stay there, also.

      So what’s your point?

Trump stays at Mar-a-Lago. You would have his Secret Service detail stay at the Super 8 down the road?

If you truly believe something like that is even possible, then you are part of the problem. Government works as government works. It costs money. You are talking about the costs of a President who followed the President who purchased a brand-new 35 foot motorhome to travel in because he doesn’t like travelling in cars.

      Think about that.

      1. Of course he “likes” to stay at his properties, it’s pouring tax dollars into his own pocket.
A minimally ethical president would avoid even the appearance of making decisions on the job that benefit himself.
I hadn’t heard about Obama’s trailer. Did he get to keep it when he left?

        1. Ethical? Like Obama?

As for the motorhome, I rather doubt it since it belongs to the govern…the People. That would be like the outgoing President taking home his limo or AF1. But the fact remains “We, the People” spent $1.1M on that motorhome. Has President trump spent that much in his own properties yet?

          I think not.

          1. Trumpsters love their whataboutisms, but they rarely make sense. Besides the fact that Trump profits personally by selling accommodations to his own Secret Service — and that he goes to his resorts probably more frequently than any President has EVER left the White House — he also increased membership fees at Mar-a-Lago after winning the Presidency from $100,000 per person to $200,000. If the resort had even only 40 members, his selling access to himself pays for the salary he is donating.

I can’t help but notice that Trumpies who crow about Trump donating his salary had nothing to say about Obama, at a comparatively minuscule net worth, donated his entire $1.4 million Nobel Prize award money.

And you’re whining about the fact that he was transported in armored buses instead of armored limos? Trumpies sure do have their priorities out of whack.

  2. Trump doesn’t know his salary, because he donates it away. So far he has taken home $0.00 from the presidency.

    1. Maybe.

It’s pretty difficult to believe that he doesn’t know the salary of the job he tried to obtain for so long, but I guess it is possible that he is that completely uninformed. That certainly would not surprise me.
