This is her only significant nude scene in the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and it earned her second place on our poll to determine the best nude scene of 1999.
As I try to look back on the 1999 list objectively, I am of the opinion that this performance is nowhere near the second-best of the year. She was already 44 during the shoot, and there were better scenes on the list done by younger, more attractive women. I guess she was riding the zeitgeist at the time.
Boy, are you wrong on that. I’d been waiting for years for Rene to do a nude scene, and that fit the bill.
I think you made my point, rather than disagreed with it. “She was riding the zeitgeist.” I completely supported her high finish at that time, and was enthralled by the Scavullo photos which were re-released almost concurrent with the movie.
But … absent that zeitgeist …
If we had done this vote in 2018 as we did with other years in the 1990s, trying to look back at the year objectively rather than viewing it through the passions of a contemporaneous lens, I doubt she would have been in the top five, possibly not even in the top ten.
