  1. I do not understand my country any more. I suppose part of this is just getting older. Many people who were my age might in 1969 found America baffling, and perhaps they thought the future could be dreadful. In some ways, I guess they would feel it IS dreadful, because abortion is legal and homosexuality is accepted. And the “Patriot” Act allows government domestic spying to an staggering extent, and the War on Drugs has chipped away at civil rights for decades.

But to me, it only seems to be dreadful on side of government encroachment on civil liberties in the name of “security”, either from criminals or foreign enemies. Otherwise, what those older people would see as dreadful is the extension of rights to people who did not previously have them, because those people (homosexuals or women who wanted an abortion and so on) were considered inherently evil.

I would argue that what we are faced with today is much different. I would argue that what we are faced with today is a triumph of oligarchy, of a desire to return to a racist and sexist past, and of foreign efforts (hello, Putin!) to divide Americans against each other.

I would very much like to be wrong, and for America’s future to be bright, not just economically, but also in terms of freedom and liberty and open, honest government. But I cannot listen to ANYTHING that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth and have any faith in a future of which he is harbinger. Can you?

  2. This poll is interesting because it also gives some of the highest support for either impeaching Trump or at least holding impeachment hearings.
