Thousands of fundies petition Netflix to cancel Good Omens

Unfortunately for them, the show is not on Netflix!

Gaiman responded to the petition on Twitter, writing: “I love that they are going to write to Netflix to try and get #GoodOmens cancelled. Says it all really. This is so beautiful … Promise me you won’t tell them?”

  1. The boycott against Last Temptation likely increased its box office. Nonreligious people who would not have considered seeing a Jesus movie likely thought, “If the Fundies hate it, it must be good.”

I recall an equally successful boycott against Life of Brian.

    1. Brian was actually advertised as “so funny it was banned in Norway”, which it was.

I can’t get into Pratchett, I’m luke-hot on Gaiman, but when the old negative barometer pegs this hard I might have to check it out.

  2. Reminds me of the outcry against The Last Temptation of Christ. People picketing didn’t really know what it was about other than Jesus had sex with Mary Magdalene. While the story was actually theologically very solid dealing with the potential that Jesus was tempted in every way (that would be from Hebrew 4:15). I didn’t really care for the movie (the book was better), but it wasn’t because it was bad theology.

I am a Christian, and not even a particularly progressive one (depending on who you compare me to), but when Christians protest without even knowing the basic facts it just pisses me off. Before I condemn the show, I’m going to at least watch a little.

    1. I’m with you in that while I thought the movie was OK, I found the book brilliant and actually highly spiritual (as opposed to disrespectful of Christianity).

  3. OK…this show hadn’t hit my radar, but if the Fundies hate it that much, I really need to watch it!!

  4. It’s also effectively already cancelled, seeing as it was just a one-off mini-series of a book, and there won’t be any more.
