The Nationals are THIS close …

After this game, they are on the verge of going to the World Series with all their pitchers rested. That means Strasburg and Scherzer could theoretically start five games in a seven game series, all of them on full rest. That’s a big edge.

  1. It wasn’t so much that they wanted to be rid of Harper but they had to both fill a lot of holes and hold back money for Rendon, who has unquestionably been the better player of the two over the last several years. Corbin and Sanchez are a major upgrade from the likes of Gio Gonzalez and Tanner Roark (traded for another Tanner, Rainey). The catching tandem of Suzuki/Gomes is an infinite upgrade from Wieters. Dozier was a plus in the second half. The two clowns in the bullpen we don’t talk about – the memories are still too raw. Hudson and Parra have been good in-season pickups; Rodney and Strickland have been mediocre stopgaps. And Dusty kind of fired himself when he was sleeping through the batter’s interference call at the plate two years ago in the Cubs ALDS.

The thing is everything could go rotten this winter. They might not get Rendon to return. Strasburg could opt out of his contract. Doolittle might be able to opt out – he has an odd contract. Zimm won’t have his option picked up, but may come back for less money. The 5th starter spot is murky. Kendrick will be an FA. The middle relief still sucks. The Lerners are real rich but have tended to be real cheap at precisely the wrong times. Rendon and Soto are the kind of 3/4 combo you don’t see often, maybe potentially the best since Ramirez/Big Papi. If they don’t make a sincere effort to get Tony Two Bags back, it will be worse than a crime, it’ll be a blunder.

  2. Nationals finally start winning in the playoffs. All they had to do was get rid of Bryce Harper and Dusty Baker. Who knew?

Of course, the Phillies, in their infinite wisdom, paid a fortune for Harper and are now interviewing Dusty for a managerial position.
