Charlie’s angels went to hell

Ford v Ferrari put up some good numbers for this time of year and scored an A+ CinemaScore. Audiences were heard cheering at the end of the film, ala a Rocky film.

Charlie’s Angels, on the other hand, barely registered a small blip. It will finish the weekend with less than $10 million. I have watched it, and there’s no reason for you to do so except that Kristen Stewart shows an unexpected gift for comedy. Her career will not be hurt by the bomb, but the franchise will undoubtedly be halted, and Elizabeth Banks can probably expect to go back to working as a full-time actress. (She did everything in this film: script, direction, performance)

  1. The thing about the last Terminator movie is that while the box office was bad, the movie itself was pretty good and got mostly positive reviews. Charley’s Angels wasn’t as good as Terminator Dark Fate, but it wasn’t terrible either. 57% on Rotten Tomatoes just misses being fresh. But Roddy’s right, nobody was asking for either film. I saw it and I don’t think Elizabeth Banks did a bad job. If anyone did a bad job it would have to be the studio for its choice of release date, how it was marketed, or for green-lighting it in the first place. There are directors that are box office draws in and of them selves, such as Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan. But aside from them, I think you can only really judge a director by how good their movies are. Unfortunately, many great films considered classics today bombed at the box office originally. But I feel confident that this Charley’s Angels film will not be one of them. It’s OK, it’s not great.

  2. This was a movie nobody demanded, much in the same way that nobody demanded another Terminator movie.

  3. Eh, Banks can do another Pitch Perfect movie. She directed the highest grossing one, produced all of them, and they’ve all made money. Anyway, who wants a Charlie’s Angels movie without early 2000’s Cameron Diaz?
