Bloomberg to join Democratic debate amid poll surge

With an unexpected 19%, “He came in second place in the NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll. Bernie Sanders came in first with 31% support nationally and Joe Biden was in third place with 15%.”

  1. Sleestack were extremely tall. I recall reading somewhere that the producers got members of the UCLA Men’s Basketball Team to play them on the series. For some reason, when I picture Division 1 basketball players, I do not picture Bloomberg. It must be because of his age…

If Bloomberg is placing second in national polls, it is in the best interest of the Democratic Party and honestly the other candidates to have him in the debates. The debates will give the other candidates the opportunity to score points off Bloomberg in a more or less even playing field. It will also give primary voters the opportunity to see how he performs.

Sanders and Warren are attacking the way Bloomberg is buying his way to the nomination. But there is one important fact to keep in mind. Unquestionably campaigns need money to run, but all money does is allow you to reach voters with your message. If neither you nor your message appeal to voters all the money in the world won’t help you win. Self-financing billionaire candidates are a result of campaign finance laws and the 1st Amendment. There are limits to how much you can donate to other candidates, but no limit as to how much you can spend on yourself. If Bloomberg loses the nomination though, I expect he will keep running ads against Trump and possibly for the actual nominee. So long as he doesn’t coordinate with another campaign those ads are legal independent expenditures. But does anyone know if Bloomberg has said he will support Sanders if Sanders is the nominee? That might be hard for him. It’s also possible he may endorse Sanders but curtail his ad spending. Or maybe he just hates Trump that much he will go all out for Bernie.

    1. You’ve outlined the important questions. Liberals hope that Bloomberg will throw in millions or even billions in advertising (not coordinated with the candidate) even if he loses the nomination. But will he do that for an avowed socialist? Stay tuned.

  2. According to Bloomberg news, it’s now a two man race between Bloomberg and Sanders. Bloomberg also paid me $20 to post this comment.

  3. Who else remembers Land of the Lost? Is it just me, or does Bloomberg look like a sleestak? Someone at work said so, now I can’t unsee it.

    1. At this point he is still the overwhelming preference of black voters, and is fairly popular with the elderly, so he is doing very well in Georgia and fairly well in SC, for example, and is about even with Bloomberg in Florida (old people don’t like Bernie).

      1. In other words, all the states the Democrats won’t win no matter what (outside of maybe a shot at Florida) in the general election, and shouldn’t even be recognized in the primary.

He’s doing the Hillary strategy. Win the states in the deep south that absolutely do not matter, and hand the general election away.
