How Karen became a meme

A ‘Karen’ is someone who throws a tantrum over any slight or inconvenience, often, but not necessarily, for racist reasons. Karens call the police on harmless non-whites and always ask to speak to the manager. They never mind their own business about somebody breaking a rule, even if the offender represents no problem of any kind.

Bill Maher explains:

The article mentions that some people consider the Karen concept sexist, but it isn’t really. While a Karen is usually an entitled, white suburban mother, anybody can be a Karen. For example, in that confrontation between the black birdwatcher and the angry white dog walker, they were both Karens, although the woman called the police for no reason, lied to them, and did so to report a harmless black man, which means she went FULL Karen.

But even a young black man can be a Karen because this is a country of equal opportunity. It’s such a great country that a Karen can even become President.

  1. I’m not sure how your points are relevant to this post, but in response to one of your points: Twitter has the right to censor Donald Trump’s personal account, or even the government itself, if Trump or the government breaks its rules, but the government does not have the right to censor Twitter. (1st Amendment.)

It does not matter whether they are a platform or a publisher. The government may pass no law to override the First Amendment, which guarantees them that right.

Of course the government could take away their Section 230 legal protection from liability, and make them a publisher rather than a platform. That would hurt those companies and change the internet dramatically, but they would still have that same right. And that is not going to help Trump. Even if congress passed a repeal of 230, the first thing Twitter would have to do would be to ban Trump, since it is only their special protection from liability that allows them to host his account in the first place.

And as for Trump’s point that Twitter is trying to interfere in the election, I don’t know whether it is true, but if it is, it’s their right, just as any corporation can make massive donations to Trump PACs. Twitter can de-platform Trump for violating their TOS, which he has done many times, and they can refuse all pro-Trump advertising if they want to, although to do so would seem like economic suicide. The Citizens United ruling effectively freed corporations to directly advocate for the election or defeat of candidates. While Judge Stevens argued that the Court’s ruling represented “a rejection of the common sense of the American people, who have recognized a need to prevent corporations from undermining self government,” he remained in the minority.

I agree with Justice Stevens’ dissent. I don’t really care for the way corporations, tech or otherwise, can influence elections, but as old Wally Cronkite used to say, “That’s the way it is.”

There doesn’t seem to be any way for Trump to move forward in this game to gain any advantage. The bully has been bullied.

  2. And this ladies and gentlemen is why I dislike liberals so much lately. You take the most superficial position possible that might appear virtuous but in reality it’s just as bad if not worse than Trump’s positions.

Imagine defending the San Francisco scumbags that has been mass-censoring the internet for years using the excuse of “muh private company”, or worse, by claiming that the government forcing them to stop censoring political groups and ideas is itself censorship. Btw amongst those political groups they’re censoring are socialists so I’m preempting your strawman about only banning nazis.

Since when did the liberals become bigger corporate and status quo bootlickers than fucking conservatives? I know Trump is making these decisions usually for dumb reasons but his decisions are right. Another example that blew my fucking mind was fucking Pelosi whining about Trump blocking the fucking Patriot Act and accusing him of not caring about the country’s security, this shit is fucking unreal now.

    1. Come on, where’s that famous love for the free market? We don’t need the big government nanny-state swooping in with a bunch of regulations. Just be patient, the Invisible Hand of the market will be along soon to fix everything, Karen.

      1. The one issue hes right on is that both democrats and republicans are now both pro big government AND pro big business. Both parties are now rampant with corruption and cronyism. And they play everyone’s emotions like a fiddle to gain power.

        1. Steverino, do you think the Republicans and the Democrats want the same kind of government? Because I very much do not. Both of them wanting large or powerful governments does not make them similar if what they want those large governments to do is radically different. As is the case. Please try and think what is you actually mean.

          1. I don’t want big government regardless of the form. That’s why people like me have to decide on the lesser of two evils. I’m ashamed of what our country has become but I refuse to accept that one party is sincere, because they aren’t. I want to see the little guy have opportunity to succeed. I don’t want to see the Ivy League educated elites grab all the spoils, nor do I want to see all the financial “engineers” grab the spoils. I want to see a world where the government allows free markets to reign but polices those freemarkets to ensure they are free of corruption. I want to eliminate bureaucracy and red tape which only benefit large companies who can afford to cut through that tape. Carly Fiorina had it right. Big government and big business are in cahoots. More regulation requires more lawyers, accountants and consultants. Small business can’t afford them and therefore can’t compete and ultimately fails. The end result of coronavirus will be the wealthy becoming exponentially wealthier, as they did in 08. We aren’t creating opportunity. Instead we are fighting amongst ourselves about issues that distract us from government and Wall Street controls. The big banks should have failed. It would have been healthier. GM should have declared bankruptcy. It would have been healthier. We would have seen community banks and automotive startups rise from the ashes. We need change. But neither party is offering it.

No. Just no. When you say that, you need to take a long look at yourself.

Also, the fact that you are exploding with rage against EVERYONE – right wing and left wing – is scary. Are you a quiet guy who mostly keeps to himself? Just asking.
