Pompeo caught in his lies

Pompeo has claimed that he could not have asked to dismiss the IG to suppress an investigation into his actions because he was not aware of any investigation.

Except he was:

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to sit for an interview with the State Department inspector general’s office as part of its probe into the administration’s move to bypass Congress and expedite last year’s $8 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia by declaring an emergency, a congressional aide told CNN Monday.”

He did provide written answers, so he was certainly aware of the investigation.

Also suspicious:

1. Pompeo can’t produce any alternative explanation for why he wanted the IG gone. He just babbles on about the guy being “not additive.” When asked for specifics, he disappears.

2. Pompeo has not denied any of the charges when given the chance to do so.

  1. What is Midwest Conservative talking about? Something real, or just some hype?

    1. A cursory search turns up a few hits that have nothing in common with each other. But I’m no attorney, my parents knew each other.
MC, any idea what you meant with that?

      1. Ummm…. The case is U.S. v. Menendez, 15-cr-155, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey (Newark).

        1. OK, Robert “Bob” Menenedez is a US Senator from New Jersey. He was indicted in April 2015 on federal corruption charges. All charges were dropped by the US Justice Department in January 2018. (All this is per Wikipedia.) What makes this relevant to Midwest Conservative is that Menendez is a Democrat, not a Republican, so he is trying to whip up some kind of equivalency with Barr dropping the Flynn charges. Lotsa luck there, MC.

Thanks, Nature Mom and Tanner. I have no idea of how to look up court cases.

          1. I don’t think that’s why it has become a Republican talking point. Menendez is heading up the oversight investigations and Pompeo responded, “I don’t get my ethics guidance from a man who was criminally prosecuted.” Pompeo recited the case number from memory!

That sort of ignores the facts that: (1) the judge dismissed seven of the eighteen charges because the prosecution presented no case; and (2) the hung jury voted 10-2 for acquittal on the other eleven, so the prosecutors could see the handwriting on the wall and chose not to re-try.

Clearly a conviction was not in the cards, but was Menendez actually guilty? Maybe. But the law doesn’t see it that way, so Pompeo is out of line.

(They dropped the case because they couldn’t win. That’s not really comparable to the Flynn case, where they dropped it after they had already won!)

          2. Thanks some more, Tanner and Uncle Scoopy. You’d think MC would have the courtesy to explain WHAT THE HELL he is talking about, instead of making us do it for him. On the other hand, the explanations we come up with probably make more sense than his.

  2. How does someone with this background (case # 15-155 New Jersey Federal Court) 1) stay in elected office and 2) get more play than Quid Pro Quo Joe??

What is the distraction really about? How many of these ever stuck?

There are crooks all over Washington, this is about good vs. bad not Rep vs. Dem

    1. How many of these ever stuck? So far, pretty much all of them. Ryan Zinke and Scott Pruitt come to mind. On the other land, Trump is far more lawless now. If the Zinke and Pruitt cases had happened in 2020, Trump probably would have dug his heels in on them.

We’ll have to see what happens with Pompeo. I understand that everyone who has ever met Pompeo despises him, so Trump will probably have to stand alone if he wants to defend him.

  3. Expect the distraction to come soon, the GOP is already prepping for more ‘investigations’ of the GOP talking points.

Lets spend another 8 figures on an investigation about a non-Trump politicians son having a conflict of interest, where someone got their emails sent, or 4 people dying in Libya.

Time to play the hits again while 92,000 are dead and we’re sinking into a depression while all the bailout money is being funneled to Wall Street to run small businesses out for good, or the top 1%, as usual.

    1. Correction…that would be quid pro quo Don…as in DJT. (In response to Midwest Con.)
