“Russia Declares Venus a Russian Planet”

To the other nations: Don’t worry about this. It’s OK as long as you control Uranus.

  1. “I was wrong about the American people, and that to me is the real revelation, and the real tragedy.”

I think Americans are very good at fooling themselves. Many Europeans stopped believing in “American Exceptionalism” decades ago. The increasing income disparity in the US along with the drop in US social mobility (70.4) compared to “socialist “ countries like Denmark (85.2) was a big clue. Even Russia scores a 64.7.

    1. Tanner? It is not surprising that many Europeans have no very high opinion of the United States, and have not for a long time. This is not news. It is news to find out that a much larger proportion OF YOUR OWN COUNTRY are much worse people than you thought they were, and that at best, they are willing believing lies, some of the quite stupid, while the truth is freely available.

So, for my part, you could stop giving us the European view on how awful America is. Anyone here who is open to reason already knows we are in deep trouble now, and that getting out of it may be very, very hard, specifically because of the large segment of the public I described.

I already feel bad about writing that, because you have written many useful things, about COVID-19 for instance, but Trump, the reality he has revealed, and the damage he has done (and continues to do) is getting to me today.

  2. A) This, like the US putting a flag on the Moon, is a symbolic move, It is symbolic of Russia being run by a major asshole and dangerous troublemaker.

    B) Think Trump will agree to this instantly, or will he wait 36 hours so he can claim to be tough on Russia?

    1. Lets be honest, we don’t even have to put a country flag on these planets. We already know who it really belongs to, like with this planet right now: the wealthy and the corporations they run.

Once they torch this planet and turn it into pure hell, they’ll be able to get a colony (sponsored by Foxconn, Amazon, and Exxon) up quickly with some good ole fashioned US corporate welfare!

And think of all the possibilities for economic growth not available on earth! And the usual stuff, plus more economic growth! Monthly charges on solar radiation protection, Earth approximation gravity, and oxygen! That’s a lot of shareholder growth guys.

And any messy cleanup due to corporate arrears? A simple cost efficient wind turbine will do the trick. We’ll name it ‘the invisible turbine of the market.’ Sorry to inform you, but your grandma was 90 days in arrears, she was jettisoned towards Andromeda – we’ve taken care of the cost of deployment and placed a claim on her estate free of legal charge so you don’t have to worry about it.

The pure American conservative/libertarian market dream – on every planet! Don’t worry though, those things won’t happen to YOU. The wealth will surely trickle down this time.

      1. Indy, if you don’t pace yourself, you won’t last until the election. I agree with you, but you need to save this kind of effort for more appropriate provocations.

Or, if your level of outrage is too high for that, you need to stop just writing to a handful of people like us, and start marching in the streets.

I don’t mean to be snarky, really. I have days when everything triggers flaming rage about Trump and the Republicans and the oligarchs (effectively) who control the GOP, so I understand. And that is only right, because they are truly an outrage, one that I would have thought Americans would not tolerate for a month. I was wrong about the American people, and that to me is the real revelation, and the real tragedy.

        1. I should have said the oligarchs control the right wing media, which has poured out lies 24/7 for decades now, as well.
