Jody Swafford applies lotion to Laura Lee in that glittering jewel of the silver screen, “Evils Of The Night” (1985)

The cast of this film is delightful: John Carradine, Tina Louise, Julie Newmar, Neville Brand and Aldo Ray. The production values really add to the fun, as they spared no expense on the special effects (I think they went to Toys R Us and bought something like a Battlestar Galactica toy, then hung it in front of a black background, Ed Wood style.)

About a decade later, the same director made a James Dean biopic starring Casper Van Dien. I have not seen that film, but once again, his casting was amazing: Connie Stevens, Casey Kasem, Diane Ladd, Robert Mitchum (?!), Mike Connors, and many others. That’s right, Robert Mitchum and Casey Kasem, together at last!

  1. I hope no one ever spilled the beans to these brilliant young ladies that you don’t need a friend to apply sun tan lotion to your FRONT. You can do that yourself. You only need a friend to help you apply the sun tan lotion to your BACK. But we’re all the better for their ignorance.

  2. Definitely a Battlestar Galactica prop from the original 1978 version.

BSG props/clips appear in a number of low-rent sci-fi films, including (speaking of MST3K classics) Space Mutiny. My guess is that series creator Glen Larson, progenitor of many cheesy 70s TV hits such as Knight Rider and Magnum P.I. figured BSG’s day had come and gone and decided to milk what he could from the assets. It was a notoriously expensive show to produce, and since it only lasted one season I wouldn’t be surprised if it had lost money.

  3. This movie is #1 on my wish list for Rifftrax and/or MST3K to riff. If none of them do it, I hope to do it myself if I can get a riffing troupe together here in DFW. It’s comedy gold.
