The Braves are World Series champions

I’m not a Braves fan, but they won me over this year. At the crack of dawn on August 2nd, they had a losing record (52-55) in baseball’s weakest division. On that sad morning in Atlanta, the guy who led the NL in HR and RBI last year was no longer available, and the other guy on pace for 50 homers this year was no longer available. That left them with no outfield production because they had lost their left and right fielders, and their center fielder can’t hit the broad side of a barn.

And now they are World Series champs. It took some slick mid-season acquisitions and some gritty, inspired play to pull off a great final third of the season, and then to defeat some powerhouse teams in the playoffs. I tip my hat to ’em.

  1. I know playoffs are what they are, but it irks me when bad teams get hot at exactly the right time. C’est la vie.

    1. This year didn’t bother me, but I was really annoyed that year when the Cardinals were the “world champions” with an 83-78 record.

    2. Mixed bag. I like competitiveness & upsets. This year was not dominated by powerhouses. Good for MLB. OTOH, I like small ball. Triples are sweeter than homers. A triple play is a treat. I like pitchers that get ground outs, not K’s. I like batters who hit ’em where they ain’t & RBIs from singles & stolen bases. Old school. At heart, I’m such a dinosaur.

    3. probably a better ruler is to look at records after the trade deadline. These late season pickups change the course of the season for many teams.

  2. I was calling this the unapologetic cheaters vs the unapologetic Native American mockers. Plus both are from states with recent legislative atrocities… but I still like baseball and the individual player. Freeman finally got the chance to shine in big games. Grienke comes through with pinch it in the biggest game of the year; lots of great, small moments.
