Final Winter Olympics medal count

It doesn’t matter whether you sort by most medals or most golds, Norway established itself as the Kingdom of Winter.

Their total is a bit deceptive in that 20 Norwegians took medals in Biathlon. That’s 14 different events, two of which were 4-person team victories. Who even knew that many Biathlon medals were available? Maybe next Winter Olympics they can add 20 different herring-eating events, and pad that count even more.

But I’m not deprecating their achievement. To win that many medals, with such a small population to draw from, is a truly impressive achievement. In fact, I believe every single Norwegian citizen won an Olympic medal.

In the last analysis, a medal is a medal. Pickleball and badminton are not grueling sports and I don’t have to get up at five AM for running and weight training, but my medals in the Senior Olympics count just the same as the ones earned in the really demanding sports like triathlon. (Believe it or not, beach volleyball is the hardest senior sport, not because it’s so demanding, although it is demanding enough. The reason it is so grueling is that one can only defeat a single team at a time. Triathletes basically compete in a single race, establish their time, and then it’s over, while beach volleyball teams have to keep playing opponent after opponent in a short stretch of time, and they have to do that on sand, which is really hard work. I get sore just thinking about it.)

Anyway, getting back to the point, an Olympic medal is a tremendous achievement, and many Norwegians are flying home with them.

  1. Highlight for me Jessie Diggins silver in 30km cross-country free. First non-Euro to win a medal in this event and 1st U.S. female to win 2 medals in individual cross-country events at an Olympics. First two ever by a U.S. female in individual cross-country events notwithstanding.

Plus she’s a hot looking babe with a bubbly personality 🙂 iow the full package! 2018 ESPN Body Issue notwithstanding, eh.

    Let the games begin …

  2. The Russian figure skating scandal was about the only thing that keep the Winter Games in the news. Most of the events are unrelatable to middle class people, rely on judging and fake environments.

      1. NBC rightly previewed the games w/Shiffrin as America’s sweetheart competing for several golds. She tanked! Oops!

Other reasons from a discussion at my go-to discord …

        – bad timezone (3rd in a row)
        – NBC shit coverage (which the internet has made painfully obvious)
        – China human rights
        – Americans see China as a global threat.
        – most younger Americans have cut the cord
        – anyone who wanted to watch used a VPN
        – lack of fans giving this Olympics no vibe
        – poor opening so no hype
        – US had few headline athletes
        – too much cable tv competition, netflix/amzn, etc notwithstanding
        – Gu competing for china was a total downer, many Americans think she’s a traitor! 😮
        – only a few NBC commentators actually in Beijing because of covid
        – covid
        – repeating mainly Shiffrin’s poor performance as she was to be NBC/U.S. star performer
        – Olympics are becoming like award shows lol 💤

Despite this the best performance by the U.S. winter olympics team ever many more events notwithstanding.

Another factor mentioned previously ie the cold war ended so harder to hate the U.S.S.R. now Russia lol although Putin is trying hard to renew the rivalry, eh 😉 iow the U.S. was always obsessed with beating Russia going back to the 1950’s ~ sports and NASA space program starting late ’50s.

Bottom line NBC probably still made a small profit with advertising prices agreed upon before the games and NBC bought media rights for Olympic coverage ’til 2032 at 2014 prices.

        https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2014/05/nbc-to-air-olympics-through-2032-under-new-rights-extension/

And one would think the situation can’t get any worse than Beijing moving forward ie Paris/Italy/L.A. upcoming ’24/’26’/’28 respectively and possibly Salt Lake City 2030 with Brisbane, Oz 2032 confirmed.

Yielding back the balance of my time …

  3. Continue to be baffled that the most pro-gun nation on Earth gets spanked in the Biathlon.

Wasn’t the point of the NRA to help perpetuate sport shooting?

  4. What on earth nonsense is this… Crosscountry skiing/Biathlon/icehockey are the best and only sports that matter … rest of the sports in WO are blaahh..

    1. Wait – you forgot ski jumping!

I believe the Olympic committee should move indoor volleyball and basketball to the winter games. Those sports, coupled with ice hockey, would really turn the games into spectator-friendly events with powerful international appeal instead of something that nobody ever thinks about until it actually starts and takes up some TV time for no known reason.

      1. The problem with moving basketball to the Winter Olympics is that it would all but guarantee that no NBA players will appear again.

    2. Biathlon has the potential to be the very best Olympic sport if they just change the rules a bit. Have all the competitors start together, and shoot at each other rather than at targets. Gold goes to the last Norwegian standing. Bronze and silver are awarded posthumously to other Norwegians.

      1. nope… F for effort being funny but doesn’t work.. those sports are brilliant to watch.. rest of them not really.. figure skating/snowboarding etc etc. opinion sports shouldn’t even be there at all..

  5. Meanwhile, Germany is fairly dominating in sledding:

Bobsleigh: 7/12 total medals (3 out of 4 gold medals)
Luge: 6/12 total medals (4 out of 4 gold medals)
Skeleton: 3/6 total medals (2 out of 2 gold medals)

The only event they didn’t win was the women’s mono bob (didn’t know that existed to be honest), where they didn’t even get a single medal.
