  1. You can keep all the formularized crap that passes for popular music. I find this video sexier and more moving than anything I could name today.

    1. Sweeeet.

It’s so frustrating knowing that, out there on the periphery, there’s new music that I know I’d absolutely adore, but not having enough free time to properly seek it out. Any assist is appreciated.

  2. Remember when singers didn’t have to show their tits on stage — or be surrounded by dancers and lights and smoke and other bullshit — because they didn’t need anything to distract the audience’s attention from their lack of vocal talent? Good times!

    1. I’m guessing you must be in your 90s or more, because I’m old now and nothing was very different when I was young. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes came out in 1953, and it was basically MM and Jane Russell showing their tits while surrounded by dancers and lights and smoke and other bullshit.

The only difference is that female singers couldn’t show as much of their chests in 1953 as they can now, but big production numbers and revealing outfits have been around as long as I can remember and in almost every genre – from Julie London to Peggy Lee to Tina Turner …

      1. In my 70s, and I’m thinking Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Christine McVie, Joan Baez, Chrissie Hyde, Pat Benatar, Maria Muldaur, Janis Joplin, Debby Harry, etc., etc. GPB was a movie, not a concert. Also, there’s a difference between revealing and vulgar.

        1. There are performers like that now, as well. Beyonce is in the mold of Marilyn Monroe and Tina Turner, but Adele, Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande and Celine Dion are more in the mold of Linda Ronstadt.

As I said, the only real difference between those days and now in terms of production, is that 1953’s cultural morality was less permissive. That applied across the board. Peggy Lee showed as much cleavage as she could without getting arrested, and people called her vulgar and raunchy. Beyonce does the same.

It just happens that it is possible to show much more today. But that’s not a change in the performers. It’s a change in society.

By the way, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is a movie, but it is based on a live stage show. (Then it was Carol Channing showing as much of her tits as the law would allow.)

But the big flaw in your argument is the “lack of vocal talent” snub. Beyonce and Lady Gaga put on big production numbers, and sometimes show a lot of flesh, but they can sing as well or better than any of the women on your list. They aren’t covering up a lack of talent. They are simply energizing their shows.

(Although there are cases where your argument holds. Britney Spears genuinely needed all the smoke and mirrors to cover up her poor vocals – as did Marilyn Monroe and Carol Channing!)

    1. I’m not a huge Beyonce fan, but I have to disagree on the fat thing. She looks great to me.
