U.S. News Ranks Best States for 2023

#1 kind of surprised me, but not as much as the fact that Florida was ranked #1 in the education category.

  1. Not born in the Utah but lived here most of my adult life. I would agree that the state’s brand of Republicanism is more sane and stable than most other red states. What is surprising is the low natural environmental ranking since the natural environment is the reason most of us non-Mormons came here.

    1. I have never really been in Utah except to drive through the northern bit of it on the way to Nevada. All I saw was desert. It was so completely a desert that they did not bother to build fences along the Interstate, because there were no wild animals or livestock that might wander onto the highway. That was unique to me. What’s the rest of it like?

      1. completely different depending on where you are in the state, red rocks and desert some parts, alpine lakes and snow skiing in others.

    2. See what’s happening to the GSL…a developing environmental disaster.

  2. Certainly not surprised to see New York low on the list. This state (and city) effing sucks. Crime, homeless, and trash in the streets. My hometown has become a cesspool thanks to liberal policies. They can’t even deal with 50k illegals as a self proclaimed “sanctuary city”.

    1. #20 isn’t that low…although I can’t argue with the state’s crummy grades in matters economical. And I know that a lot of Gothamites tend to consider the city the only part of the state that matters, but it’s not because of the beautiful skyscrapers that we got ranked #2 (behind only Hawaii) in the Natural Environment category. #11 in crime doesn’t suck, either. Again, state, not city. Come spend a week in the Finger Lakes, or maybe the Adirondacks–it’s good for what ails you.
Mississippi must be tickled pink they didn’t finish rock bottom, thanks to Louisiana and Alaska. And I can’t help but note that red states disproportionately occupy the cellar spots.

      1. Yes. I looked at the underlying data. It’s because of the natural environment. Considering the Catskills mountains and Hudson valley are my favorite places on earth, it’s hard to disagree. It’s the only reason I haven’t left. I didn’t grow up in the city but I agree for most it’s synonymous with the state. New York state is a fantastic place. The city is the problem.

        1. I’ve already had to put you in your place once regarding New York’s crime “problem”. Do I need to do it again? NYPD stats don’t back up your statements.

NYC has relatively low crime for a city.

You want real crime? Try any southern state.

          1. I don’t remember seeing anything from you, but I can assure you, I don’t need your input on whether or not NYC is now a shithole. It is. More specifically Manhattan. I don’t pay what I pay to be surrounded by crack addicts, homeless, and criminals.

          2. You’re the exact type of psycho that is the problem with everything. You don’t believe that wealthy people deserve the right to pay more money to be free from filth, crime, and drugs. I don’t want your people in my city. They can’t afford it, didn’t earn it, and have no right to be my neighbor. I don’t want homeless people on my trains. I don’t want mentally Ill people walking around bothering productive citizens. Basically, I deserve a better quality life than you because I can afford it and I earned it.

          3. Not to mention I have family who are LE in NYC. But you’re going to tell me about NYPD stats? I know what’s really going on. I know how the police really feel. I know what they really do on a day to day basis to give you your stats. My democrat friends wouldn’t even take up the position you’re defending. We all know what’s happening.

          4. If you actually know people in the NYPD maybe you should be asking them why their own stats are wrong. They collect them, they publish them and generally the NYPD is pretty hostile to anyone with left wing politics. What have they to gain by publishing the wrong stats?

Even if you think they’re wrong, other cities are also using their own law enforcement to also collect and publish their own stats. Are these other cities have worse than crime than their publishing?

Law enforcement has to deal with the shitheads of the world. I don’t blame them for being pessimistic. They’re still responsible for crime stats.

PS Like most conservative cranks you feel the need to bring up crime to dismiss people who have different opinions. You’ve done it multiple times in spite of having access to the same information as everyone else. Gotta play that victim card I guess.

          5. Thanks for setting the record straight on that, playgroundpsychotic. Arguing with Steverino is pretty pointless, but repudiating his lies is a valuable service.

BTW, the more I think about his statement “I don’t pay what I pay to be surrounded by crack addicts, homeless, and criminals [in NYC, ostensibly]” the less sense it makes.

  3. It looks like Fla has good graduation rates across highschool and college, and has cheap collages. Everything else was middle to upper middle. Pretty impressive. I wonder if the changes their gov’t is currently making will negatively effect thier rating in 10-15 years. (Obviously they negatively effect people right now.)

    1. If you believe their “statistics…” There are lies, damned lies and statistics.

      1. I believe the stats.

I also believe that Florida is a massive taker state living off federal dollars and tourist money. I guess its easy to fund education when you can use everybody else’s money.

        1. You really are a “psychotic”. I’m sorry your life didn’t turn out the way you planned and I’m sorry you think the world is unfair because you didn’t succeed. I get your pain.

          1. Maybe New York state would be a nicer place if it didn’t have a bunch of worthless taker states stealing money from it. Sorry, that the good people of New York can’t have a better life because they’re stuck in the same country as Florida.

  4. The Covid fabrication lie has been thoroughly debunked many, many times and the accusation was made by someone now proven to be a serial fabulist and overall nut job.

Come on. This site is better than that.

    1. Still, if this is the same US News that rates colleges, it’s pretty sketch. Minnesota, number *one* for infrastructure? Stop by sometime geniuses, I’ll show you a few hundred thousand potholes. Then we can visit the memorial for the big fucking bridge that collapsed.

  5. I mean they were caught fabricating their Covid data. No reason to think they wouldn’t do the same for their education data. Their best university is University of Florida. I could find you a single street in Massachusetts that has 5 universities better than that.

    1. Bingo..it’s pretty clear that by any objective measure MA is no. 1 in education. US News rankings are mostly crap and used to make money off of morons.

    2. The most surprising part of this ranking system is that Florida is ranked #1 in HIGHER education. David Lynch has it right in his comments above. On a scale of 1 to 100, with Massachusetts as 100, Florida might not even reach the scale at all.

It makes sense when you look at the criteria they use, none of which are related to the quality of education:

      2-Year-College Graduation Rate
      4-Year-College Graduation Rate
      Low Debt at Graduation
      Educational Attainment
      Tuition and Fees

In other words, Florida is #1 for providing a low-priced, non-challenging education where everyone graduates.

There is no mention of anything related to the quality or value of the education, like the average salaries of graduates, the number of Rhodes scholars (and other similar achievements), the percentage of graduates accepted into top graduate schools, etc.

      1. Invariably US News rankings are crap…the object is to make money and not to be “accurate” (on things that are arguably highly subjective in the first place).
