  1. I spent about a decade of my life in high school, college, and law school making pizza for a living. I got more burns on my arms from sticking them in the ovens over and over than I could count (if I could remember that far back). But I never went to a hospital because of them. I did cut my finger in a cheese shredder but that’s another story. The worst burn I ever got was on my hand from boiling cheese straight out of the oven. The reason it was so bad was because cheese just sticks to you until it is removed unlike an oven burn where you immediately flinch back. My hand blistered immediately. I could see some pretty serious burns coming from fresh out of the oven pizza.

The owner of the first pizzeria I worked at got seriously burned twice while I knew him. Both times because he did something really really dumb. The first time he was trying to light our second oven which we usually only used on Fridays. He noticed the pilot light had gone out so he lit a paper towel on fire and bent down to the open oven and through it in. The fireball burned off his eyebrows. About a year later he walked in looking like a boiled lobster. I asked him what happened and he explained his car had overheated and he’d removed the radiator cap. “At least I have my eyebrows!” he said.
