NFL Scoreboard, week 10 … College Football, Week 11

It was the best week of the year for the Jets. They got a bye.

Another win for Steeltown. 4 TDs and no picks for Big Ben, en route to 9-0.

Props to the NFL for keeping everything as normal as possible and as safe as needed (we hope).

On the other hand, College football is a real mess, as you undoubtedly know. This week, postponements affected three of the top five teams while #4 Clemson had a scheduled bye, so there was just not much happening. The Badgers did manage to play their second (!!) game of the year. It’s going to get worse as the COVID numbers multiply.

I will note in passing that North Carolina’s QB passed for 550 yards and 6 TDs. That game looked like it should have been in old days of the Big Twelve, when defense was anathema. The final score was 59-53 in regulation, after Wake Forest blew a 21-point lead.

Here’s the weekly scoreboard.

  1. The Eagles are leading the NFC East with a 3-5-1 record. There have been many 9-7 teams that won a division and, I believe, a few 8-8 teams but when was the last time a team with a below .500 record won a division? I’m genuinely curious and don’t know the answer. It’s especially pathetic because the 3-7 New York Giants have a decent chance of making the playoffs.

    1. Excluding strike years, there have been two teams to make the playoffs with losing records – and they both won their first round of playoffs!

The 2010 Seattle Seahawks were 7-9. They made the playoffs by winning the NFC West. The stats gurus at 538 called them “the worst playoff team ever,” but they won their first post-season game, and put up a good fight in the second round.

The 2014 Carolina Panthers were 7-8-1, but made it to the post-season by winning the NFC South. The Panthers also won the first round of the playoffs before bowing out.

In the 1982 strike year, there were two 4-5 teams that made it into the post-season: the Lions and the Browns. They are the only two teams to make the playoffs with a losing record without winning their divisions. They both went on to get shellacked in the first round of the playoffs.

      1. Thanks!

I thought I remembered a team that made the playoffs with a losing record that also had a tie.

Very likely who ever wins the NFC East will easily be “the worst playoff team ever.”

        1. It does seem that way, unless some team goes on a tear, or has several games scheduled against the Jets.
