Robby Cano is banned for a year

The Mets never catch a break.

“New York Mets second baseman Robinson Cano tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug and will be suspended for the entire 2021 season.”

Helluva good ballplayer. For one five-year period he never finished lower than 6th in the MVP balloting. 571 lifetime doubles. Lifetime batting average over .300.

But he is 38 years old. This may end his career, and will certainly bring a screeching halt to his drive for the HoF.

  1. A Canoe earned $24 million, but it had to die to do it, and that is damaging GM’s legacy? Truly, baseball is far more confusing than I thought.

(My proofreading skills are poor too.)

  2. While Canoe’s suspension doesn’t do much for Brodie Van Wagenen’s legacy as a GM, it is hardly the end of the world for the Mets. The Mets new owner, Steve Cohen, said that the Mets wouldn’t be spending like drunken sailors. I take that to mean at the very least he is going to want to keep payroll under the luxury tax threshold. It is being reported that after removing Canoe’s $24 million 2021 salary, and accounting for arbitration raises the Mets will be $81 million under that threshold. So the Mets could sign Trevor Bauer and George Springer and trade for Francisco Lindor and still be under it. Of course Canoe is die to earn $24 million in each of 2022 and 2023 as well. So they probably won’t get all 3 of those players. Then again, it’s not like Cohen couldn’t afford it.

    1. Yep. Just because it’s the first time that they got caught, doesn’t mean that it’s the first time they took them.
