Scoop’s footnote #1: OSS 117 is kind of the French version of 007. In the earliest incarnations in the fifties through seventies, he was pretty much a straight Bond-like character, but the most recent films hover somewhere between homage to and parody of the superspy genre. The original character was an American spy working in Europe (OSS was the predecessor of the CIA), but the latest 117 is a French agent played by Jean Dujardin. Who? You may have forgotten him already, but in 2012 he had his fifteen minutes of fame when he won both the Oscar and the BAFTA as the best actor in a leading role, for his performance in The Artist. In the process of earning those accolades, he beat out such industry stalwarts as Pitt, Clooney and Oldman. Because the singer-dancer-comic has such a jokey take on the classic spy, Dujardin is to 117 kinda-sorta as Roger Moore is to 007.

Unless you are a major film buff, if you run into Dujardin at a party and he tells you he once earned the best actor Oscar, you would think he was kidding.

And, in a sense, he would be.
