Brian Kemp slaughters Perdue in the Georgia gubernatorial primary

Trump’s personal vendetta against Brian Kemp will have to wait for another day. Kemp tripled Perdue’s vote count – and then some – despite Trump’s whole-hearted opposition! Kemp won every county in the state.

The Georgia gubernatorial election will pit two of Trump’s mortal enemies in opposition. (Kemp vs Stacy Abrams) I have to think he will abstain from that choice. That’d be like Superman making a choice between Luthor and Brainiac.

  1. I take the view that while there may not be 100% toe-the-line Trumpism among the GOP, even the non-Trump candidates who won are all either batshit crazy or outright threats to representative democracy.

  2. Other than the Georgia Governor and Secretary of State’s race, Trump endorsed or pro-Trump candidates won all of the other major races on Tuesday. This gets to the distinction between Trump endorsed candidates and ‘Trumpian candidates.’

Trump supporters who won on Tuesday:
    1.Sarah Huckabee Sanders
    2.Herschel Walker
    3.Marjorie Taylor Greene
4.Casey Wardynski or Dale Strong (Alabama 4th open district to replace Mo Brooks.) Runoff
    5.Jake Evans (Georgia 6th District)
6.Mike Collins or Vernon Jones (Georgia 10th open district to replace Jody Hice.) Runoff

Even Kemp and Raffensperger are both Trumpian, even though Trump opposed them. For all of Raffensperger arguing against the ‘stop the steal’ he supports the new Georgia vote suppression law, and apparently the worst Kemp would say about the ‘stop the steal’ lies were ‘we had to follow the law.’

    1. No..it’s much more a mixed bag. The Trump candidate for Senator in Alabama is toast. Cawthorn lost. PA is too close to call and going to a recount. Trump Georgia AG candidate lost. Trump’s candidate for Governor in Idaho and Nebraska lost. Etc.

      1. I was only commenting on the candidates on this Tuesday. I wasn’t aware that Trump had endorsed a candidate in the Georgia AG race. In Alabama though, that’s not correct:
1.Trump unendorsed Mo Brooks about two months ago
2.Mo Brooks actually isn’t ‘toast’, he made the runoff.

I don’t think he’s favored to win, but if Trump re-endorses him, then who knows?

The thing I find the most interesting there though is that Katie Britt in Alabama is a far right pro wealthy elite ‘economic freedom’ candidate. That she’s somehow the more moderate and more sane candidate in the runoff says all anybody should need to know about the modern Republican Party.

Katie Britt has also joined in the ‘stop the steal’ lie arguing that there needs to be a ‘forensic audit’ of the 2020 (Presidential) election results. Again, she may not be Trump endorsed, but she’s every bit Trumpian.

This is from her website in regards to her anodyne far right economic positions:
I will work tirelessly to create an environment in which job creators can do what they do best. That means getting government out of the way of progress by slashing burdensome regulations and supporting lower taxes that enhance America’s economic competitiveness.

Of course, her position on taxes is interesting since she also says this on her website:
I wholeheartedly believe the ballooning national debt is an existential crisis for our Republic.

So, at worst, she’s another Trumpian Bot, and, at best, she’s an unserious performative want to be media personality. In the middle, she’s a fighter for the genuinely wealthy elite. I’m sure in reality she’s some of all three (especially the third.) Yet, she’s still not as extreme as the pro insurrectionist Mo Brooks. Republicans really can only clear a very low bar these days.

        1. No Republican has actually cared about the national debt since the days of Bush the Elder. Saint Ronny “proved” it didn’t matter, and now they only use it as an excuse to avoid spending money on anything good for the general public – you know, anything Democrats want.

What this Katie Britt really wants, with a 99.9% chance is what all rich people want – tax cuts for the rich, and deep cuts in social spending. That reminds me of how Karl Rove’s secret dream for Bush the Younger’s second term was to privatize Social Security.

          1. Well, I did. But then I haven’t been a Republican for years.
But to give credit where due, Alan Simpson was the last “fiscal hawk” of stature until he retired. The man even made a video in 2012 parodying “Gangnam Style.
“The video, aimed at young people, is called “The Can Kicks Back,” a reference to the tendencies of members of Congress to forever “kick the can down the road” in order to avoid making difficult decisions about lowering the national debt. In the video, Simpson admonishes younger Americans to make better use of their social media than “instagramming your breakfast and tweeting your first-world problems.” He advises younger people to use their social media skills and resources to rally their friends to join The Can Kicks Back. If younger Americans do not take heed, Simpson says, “These old coots will clean out the Treasury before you get there.” (He was 81 at the time).

          2. Why did this Alan Simpson guy try to rally the young people? They haven’t got any more, at least for the most part. He needed to advocate raising taxes on the rich. It’s the tax cuts they’ve gotten repeatedly over the years that have made the deficit explode.

Of course, the GOP would NEVER allow that to happen. Lowering taxes on the rich is why the rich bought the party in the first place.

  3. The value of a Trump endorsement seems to depend on certain things. First, a Trump endorsement has limited effect on candidates that are well known to voters. As the sitting governor, Kemp was already well known to voters. Raffensperger, probably less well known than Kemp prior to his refusal to steal the election for Trump, didn’t win by 70%, but he did get more than 50% of the vote and avoided a run off. The Ohio senate candidates were less well known and Trump’s endorsement pushed J.D, Vance ahead of the rest of the candidates. But even there, Vance only got 32% of the vote. Would Vance have been able to win a runoff if Ohio required nominees get 50% of the vote? I don’t know.

I think Donald Trump is really salivating at the prospect of a rematch with Biden. I think Trump might win a rematch. That’s why I think it’s unlikely Biden will seek a second term. I have no idea who the Democratic nominee will be. I still think any Republican nominee other than Trump would probably be favored in 2024. Which is one reason the prospect that Trump would win the nomination really depresses me. If Trump is the nominee, the GOP would be much better off losing the presidency than it would if Trump won. Needless to say, the country would be better off as well. Of course that might depend on the Democratic nominee. But they would have to be pretty bad to be worse than Trump. From a strictly selfish perspective, Trump winning the nomination would mean a third straight election where I couldn’t in good conscience vote for the GOP nominee. Republican candidates I’ve voted for have lost in the past. But I have at least been able to hope they won. If Trump is the nominee I couldn’t even do that. All I can do is hope that there is another GOP candidate that could beat Trump. If I got to pick the 2024 GOP ticket, it would be Nikki Haley as the nominee with Marco Rubio as her running mate.

Last night, I was at a live recording of the 500th episode of Jonah Goldberg’s podcast The Remnant. Sen Ben Sasse was one of his guests and Goldberg tried to get Sasse to announce a presidential run. I could definitely support Sasse for president. I am not a fan of Ron DeSantis, but I would support him over Trump. I would support almost anyone over Trump. Maybe, not Marjorie Taylor Green, but almost anyone else. At least Madison Cawthorn will be too young to run in 2024.

    1. The only thing I remember about Jonah Goldsberg is that he wrote a book arguing that the liberals, or the Left, are the “real” fascists in America. Do I need to know anything else?

  4. I was actually more shocked that Brad Raffensperger won the Secretary of State nomination. He’s no liberal, but he opposed all of Trump’s lies about the election. Shows that there’s a silent majority of Republican voters that like Trump but don’t buy into his “stop the steal” message.

    1. And the Attorney General whomped another “Big Steal” clown. It looks like Trump won’t get any inside help in whatever he might want to try there in 2024.
A friend of mine down there told me last week that, as inept as Perdue’s campaign was, Ol’ Jody’s (Hice) was worse.
