R.I.P. – the very funny, very odd Judy Tenuta

She was a hot star in the late 80s and early 90s, and then faded away. I always liked her, but had not thought about her in years.

  1. I remember that she was slightly more tolerable than her utterly talentless contemporaries Elaine Boozler, Paula Poundstone, Ellen DeGeneres, and Rita Rudner, but she was equally as unfunny as them. Why Carlin would choose to tour with her was a total mystery. Maybe he didn’t pick her but just agreed to someone else’s idea, since she had some popularity.

    1. You have very strange taste, or lack thereof. Not digging Judy I get, she was odd. But Rudner? The standup’s standup? Getting the idea you just don’t like women.

      1. I’m getting the idea you think female comedians are funny in general, which shows very strange taste, or extreme lack thereof. Rita Rudner is the “standup’s standup”? My God… you need to start breaking your Haloperidol in half. Anti-psychotic medication can be wildly dangerous especially when mixed with alcohol & LSD. Call 911 asap if you feel suicidal. There’s help out there for you.

        1. Nikki Glaser is great on those roasts, and I think Wanda Sykes is almost always brilliant. I saw a youngish comic named Katherine Ryan recently, and she was damned funny.

I do kind of agree that some of those early female stand-ups weren’t generally up to the level of their male contemporaries, but Joan Rivers was an exception. She was outstanding. She was still hilarious and quick as an old bag.

As for Tenuta, she created a very funny specialty act, but a little bit of her went a long way. That schtick didn’t really have legs, as time demonstrated.

  2. When I lived in Georgia, she would play the comedy club on Super Bowl and invite all her gay fans. It was a wonderful wild time! I even went on stage with her once and drank beer for her shoe. I still have an autographed Judyism t-shirt.

  3. He posted a tribute, a great Judy joke. He’s getting showered with sympathy, as he should.

  4. A goddess indeed, of the religion of Judyism.

I wonder how Emo Phillips is doing?
