I feel like we overuse the word “star” these days. Mia Hamm was a soccer star. Alex Morgan is a soccer star. I don’t know who the fuck Katherine Stokely is.
It’s similar to the overuse of the word “supermodel”. Everyone is a supermodel these days, I’ve never heard of 99% of them.

Since I was a kid, all “professional” players have been elevated to stars, and the ones we called stars are now superstars. We never called Mantle, Mays or Aaron superstars, although that is certainly what they are in today’s nomenclature.
We didn’t have supermodels either. We had models. We did have superman, but he would never be confused with a supermodel, except that one time when Lex Luthor found some pink kryptonite, and I don’t want to think about that.
