Jean Simmons naked on the set of Spartacus (?)

There was no Jean Simmons nudity in the official release of Spartacus, but I suppose Kubrick was prepared to add some if possible.

I’m assuming these are the real deal. They certainly appear to be.

  1. Kirk Douglas was struggling at some point later in his career, or at least with a film he was making. And he tried to pull the ‘do you know who I am?’ bit (and maybe he did deserve more respect) when he told the director “You know, I played Spartacus.”

And another actor on the set immediately replied “No, I played Spartacus.”

  2. Does anyone know or perhaps can make an educated guess as to whether that is Jean’s bush hiding behind the, um bush, in the lower left pic? Or is she perhaps wearing a black g-string/modesty patch? Hard for me to believe they convinced her to stand there stark naked when nudity was forbidden by the production code. But anyone have inside knowledge? Scoop?

    1. Thinking about that makes me hope I can get my appetite back in time for dinner.
Now Jean was one of the great beauties. It’s frustrating that she and Deborah Kerr and Shirley Jones were around before nudity became standard.

      1. Deborah Kerr actually had a nice topless scene in The Gypsy Moths, reuniting with Burt Lancaster about 15 years after their From Here to Eternity beach clinch

  3. She was beautiful. This is a pretty old story. Kubrick knew the scene would never be allowed, but he wanted to use it as publicity knowing the media would talk about her filming a nude scene. It’s also quite possible he just wanted to see her nude. Can’t blame him. It’s good to be director.

  4. That pic puts me in mind of the old 3d viewfinder I had as a kid.
Her tay tays would look great in it.

  5. Legit and these pics have been “floating” around for at least (5) yrs. Seriously GW try to keep up.
