Timothée Chalamet was once considered the likely winner of the Best Actor Oscar for his role in this film. His likelihood on the betting markets was 78% on February 9th. The bloom disappeared from his rose, however, for a variety of reasons, while Michael B. Jordan’s popularity kept increasing to an eventual victory. Chalamet plays Marty Mauser, an aspiring table tennis champion, fiercely determined to be the best in the sport. Although the story is fictional and original, the character was inspired by real-life table tennis player Marty Reisman.
Marty Supreme was nominated for nine Oscars, winning none. That is not the record for futility, but it’s close. There are now ten films with nine or more nominations without a win.

Incidentally, when Chalamet went down on Gwyneth in that scene, he reported that her vagina smells just like a candle.
French thriller from Jean-Claude Brisseau, who also directed The Exterminating Angels, a famous autobiographical film about his own “me too” comeuppance, or lack thereof. In 2002, Brisseau was arrested on charges of sexual harassment after three women accused him of luring them into performing sexual acts on camera by promising them film roles. He was eventually found guilty, fined and given a suspended one-year prison sentence.
The wife of an influential judge kills a famous criminal, dubbed Robin Hood by the press, in her home in cold blood. She is put on trial for murder but claims that it was self-defense. Her lawyer investigates her mysterious past.
I have not seen this one. I seem to be in plentiful company in that regard. There are only 600 votes at IMDb (5.8 score), and just one linked review – and that in German! The film is from the 1990s, so you can always rely on Johnny Moronic to have it covered!

Based on IMDB, the actress playing Nafea is Yvanne Evangelista and the woman performing the ritual is probably Sasa Cabalquinto since she is credited as the Babaylan which is a Filipino shaman. The actress playing Loa is Ghdd Amaro.
The critics absolutely adored this account of Magellan’s attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Contrary to what you learned in history, he did not make it, although a few stragglers from his expedition managed to limp home to Spain. He started with five ships and more than 200 men, but more than 90% of the crew died and only one ship made it back.
This film scores a 90 at Metacritic and 88% at Rotten Tomatoes.
I couldn’t watch it. It is so slow that if Tarkovsky watched it, he’d be shouting “Get on with it” at the screen. It is one of the slowest-paced films ever made. There were actually times when I thought it had frozen, only to see the timer still ticking away.
I thought that the film was painful at 2 1/2 hours, but NPR reports that there is a nine-hour version in the works! If I had been the editor, I certainly could have cut it to a 15-minute short without losing anything important, but frankly, that would still be boring and repetitive. If you watch the trailer, it is basically the entire movie in two minutes. Just the right length.
Here’s the point: Magellan was a religious nutcase and a brutal asshole who brought misery to everyone he ever met, was betrayed because he failed to honor his own word, was killed by the indigenous people he encountered, and left behind nothing but death and the destruction of culture.

Literally translated as The Dream Cottage, this is a Swedish remake of The Money Pit. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that both of those films were updates of the Cary Grant postwar classic, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream Home.
