Effective immediately, Washington will call itself the “Washington Football Team”, pending adoption of a new name, sources tell ESPN.
This is not a final renaming and rebranding for team; this is the name it wants to use until pending adoption of a new name in the future. pic.twitter.com/sBs0Uo0ICm

Seems like a simple solution. It is mostly about city or regional pride in sports teams, the mascots are just for decoration. There is nothing fierce or inspirational about the Cardinal in St. Louis Cardinals. Cubs are just sort of rolly polly and fun.
When Baltimore had a team in the Canadian Football League (the only non Canadian team to win the Grey Cup) they were simply known as the Baltimore CFLers. I kind of like that, the Washington NFLers.
This is appropriation of a European Football term. About half the teams in the English Premier League are simply named Football Club (FC.)
“And now we have the Cowboys vs. the Football team”
Well in that case, I guess the football team would win.
Washington Team Football would have made for a better and possibly more appropriate acronym.
Btw, Dr. Fauci is throwing out the first pitch tonight at Nats Park.
