That was “Must See (Thru) TV”.
I hated how they always made Gabe Kaplan & Robert Conrad team captains. Gabe was the opposite of athletic, and Conrad had way too much egomania for such a meaningless contest.
Oh my Dog, did you ever see the Columbo with RC? Worth looking on yotube – Columbo finds Conrad, he’s down at the beach just doing some random shirtless pushups like ya do. Then Columbo has to follow him as he runs up some stairs and jumps into a pool. Totally hilarious (unintentionally).
Far as Kaplan, he was a comedian. He probably thought even the idea of him being in charge was a hoot and just went with it.
However . . . if I recall correctly, Kaplan beat Conrad in a footrace on one of the shows.
It’s amazing to me – this show really did have the stars of TV – not just some b-listers like so many of the …with the Stars shows now.
The money in tv was nowhere near as big as today. Consequently, people in Hollywood were nowhere near the annoying twats that they are today.
It’s too bad this was a throwaway sporting event as the reruns I’ve seen looks like it was shot on videotape. Being able to watch a clearer copy on newer screens would be incredible.
God how I miss the 70s. Such a great decade (well, in ways).
How did the costume guy (gotta assume it was a guy) for this show not win a Emmy? He got all those amazing looking women to wear Lycra bathing suits that didn’t have liners. So, they turned transparent when wet.

A mere Emmy? Not a Nobel?
