At last, Trump nominates one of “all the best people”

I think I can say with confidence that the other reps to the U.N. will not laugh at us this time! Trump has nominated the next Dr. Hawking!

“I believe there are scientists on both sides that are accurate.”

My theory: this is all a plot orchestrated by Betsy DeVos so that she’s no longer the dumbest person in a top level position.

Although, to be fair, Mrs. Craft may not be as dumb as she seems. She may actually realize that she is spouting nonsense. It’s difficult for her to take any sensible position on climate change, given that her husband is a billionaire coal-mining executive!

  1. The CD’s were worth it, but the candy not so much:) My view is not distorted, but factual not rose colored measurement of his complete and utter disregard for what actually helps the people of America, the more he screwed the country the more he was praised. I didn’t vote for Trump and I didn’t vote for Hillary either. You can judge what I did on your own. But, as soon as anyone defends Trump, we are immediately labeled a “right wing nut job” , sad really, but I’m not. I am an American!

  2. But, if Obama would have selected Katy Perry no one would have lambasted her as being unqualified, dumb or ignorant or even a “girl” and HE would have been the messiah again for his decision! You realize his pool to select from is gone due to the all threatening to ruin, destroy both politically and financially from the left. Only incarcerated gang members or thugs would be willing to risk the lateral moving job. No one is perfect, there is “dirt” on everyone if you did deep enough. Hell I stole candy bars and CD’s from my Kmart growing up.

    1. His pool to select from is gone because having worked in the Trump administration is going to be resume poison and everyone knows it. Not because of some “left-wing hit-job”, but because it is obvious now what Trump is and volunteering for his team shows appalling judgement.

Similarly, Obama (even if you disagree with him) was competent, so he could attract the best talent. People would have called BS on him in your weird hypothetical. But that’s going to remain a what-if-Charlemagne-had-an-uzi-level unrealistic scenario, because he wasn’t a dumbass.

We can agree that everyone has something in their background (hope you enjoyed the things you ripped off), but the foreground is more important.

Also, this doesn’t connect to anything, but screw Joe Biden.

  3. There is an interesting story (to me any way) about the differences in government in the U.S and Canada related in the book “Double Vision” about the first term of the Jean Chretien government in Canada from 1993-1997.

James Blanchard was discussing the NAFTA negotiations with Prime Minister Chretien. NAFTA had been finished between the 3 nations under Conservative leaders in Canada Brian Mulroney and Kim Campbell and George H W Bush in the U.S but it hadn’t been ratified and first Bill Clinton demanded changes and then Chretien demanded changes.

Bill Clinton negotiated side accords with Kim Campbell on labor and the environment. Chretien in the 1993 election campaigned against the agreement but left the door open slightly.

Blanchard told Chretien ‘We understand you campaigned against the agreement. We can understand you might want to kill the deal, but give us notice in advance.’

Chretien replied ‘Well, you know I say those things to campaign, but the campaign is over. I just need a couple changes.’

Blanchard ‘What if your trade minister disagrees?’

Chretien ‘Then tomorrow I’ll have a new trade minister.’

Blanchard was apparently shocked that a Prime Minister, unlike the President, could replace a cabinet minister so easily.

Chretien though appointed Roy MacLaren, an ardent free trader as his trade minister.

    1. For what it’s worth, I think Chretien got something on something to do with energy and clarification on the definition of dumping. Not 100% sure about dumping.

Chretien was concerned that oil prices would spike again like they had in the 1970s and for this the Canadian media derided him as ‘yesterday’s man.’ (OPEC is dead! Oil will never go above $25 a barrel again!) He turned out to have valid concerns but I don’t know if this agreement in NAFTA came into play when oil prices reached $100 a barrel around 2007.

  4. Ambassador Kelly Craft was the ambassador to Canada prior to this position and she was actually said to be fairly well liked by the Canadian foreign policy community.

    1. Ambassador to Canada is a non-job, like Ambassador to Norway. All it requires is a smile, a firm handshake, decent table manners, and polite respect for the host country. Chances are you can’t name one person who ever held that job.

      1. James Blanchard, the former Governor of Michigan was Bill Clinton’s Ambassador to Canada. A former South Carolina state legislator was George W Bush’s Ambassador to Canada. He did have polite manners.
Bruce Heyman was Obama’s Ambassador to Canada.

I would not have remembered Heyman except a person I follow on twitter started the hashtag #bringbackheyman

James Blanchard and his predecessor both played important roles in the NAFTA negotiations and, contrary to the criticisms, Kelly Kraft was regarded as playing a practical role in the Nafta2.0 negotiations (or whatever name is used for it.)

Canada and the United States still have the second largest trade relations (after the United States and China.)

        1. Looking it up to make sure I remembered this correctly. George W Bush had two Ambassadors to Canada. The former Governor of Massachusetts, Paul Cellucci, was the first.

I remembered the W. Bush Ambassador (though I thought there was only one) because Cellucci first praised Canada for the role we played following September 11/2001 but then chiding us for not joining in the Iraq War. He was widely told to butt out of Canadian politics.

Paul Cellucci was not at all polite.

    2. As they say in poker, “cards speak for themselves.” You can see the tape of her. I’ll let that stand over any supposed scuttlebutt.
