Not only that, your evil schemes undermine each other. What if the wildfires should warm up the gazpacho? Then where are we? First comes the hot gazpacho – then chaos.

  1. Scoopy, you might enjoy this Republican Mayor’s slippery slope logic:

    Hudson, Ohio Mayor Craig Shubert (R) told the city council that permitting ice fishing at a local park could lead to increased prostitution in their community.

    Said Schubert: “If you open this up to ice fishing, while on the surface it sounds good, then what happens next year? Does someone come back and say, ‘I want an ice shanty for X-amount of time?’ And if you then allow ice fishing with shanties, then that leads to another problem — prostitution.”

    He added: “And now you’ve got the police chief and the police department involved. Just data points to consider.”

    1. Monty Python in their prime would have been kicking themselves for not having though of this. It would have a made a perfect sketch for them, And it would have ended with an announcement that the sketch was over because it was “too silly”.

      If I were a citizen of Hudson, Ohio, I would be proud that my town boasted such a genius of surreal humor – immediately after getting him out of the mayor’s office, of course.

      Or he may be the Ohio GOP’s next gubernatorial candidate. That seems to be the road they are very far down, after all.

Once upon a time Hudson was a nice little town of about 2500 with a high school rated in the top ten in Ohio and a private academy, not to mention one of the best little public libraries you’ll ever see. One of the oldest towns in the Western Reserve (NE Ohio had once belonged to Connecticut), it was a bastion of abolitionism and a noted Underground Railroad stop. The political scene was old-style New England Yankee Republican.
        Then in the 70s and 80s the farmers in the surrounding township gave up and sold out to developers. This resulted in a population explosion to 20,000 or so and transformation into a well-to-do but overpacked suburb (of both Cleveland and Akron) with goofy politics and traffic jams downtown.
        At least the high school is still rated highly rated, although not as highly as it was in the 60s when I graduated.
        This is the second time in the last year Hudson has gotten this sort of bad national attention:
        “On May 31 in Hudson, Ohio, retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter delivered the keynote speech at a Memorial Day ceremony hosted by the local American Legion Post. When Kemter, who is white, began to speak about the lesser-known origins of Memorial Day—specifically, the formerly enslaved Black Americans who, after the Civil War, honored deceased Union soldiers by giving them proper burials—his microphone malfunctioned, or so he thought. In fact, it was not an audio malfunction; the mic had been cut. The event’s organizers, Cindy Suchan, president of the Hudson American Legion Auxiliary, and Jim Garrison, adjutant of American Legion Lee-Bishop Post 464, deliberately turned down Kemter’s microphone. According to Suchan, the history Kemter discussed was “not relevant to our program for the day.” (Belt Magazine)

          2. ISTM, tho, it was Cindy/Jim that @NM was taking about. Search term: “takings clause”. IIRC, SCOTUS decided “just compensation” meant “any amount”. The govt can take your property for $1. As opposed to $0, which would be “no compensation”.

            Moreover, “ohio” & “iowa” bear the phonetic hallmarks of being intimately connected. By a wormhole. So the schools are really one & the same place.

    2. I actually heard this long pre-internet. Supposedly if you hang a red light outside your icehouse (on a bigger lake), whores will show up. Of course, it doesn’t follow that the police chief and the police department would get involved. I don’t think those guys like to fish much.

      Still, this can’t be his real objection to ice fishing; I wonder what is… Does he just hate the guy who runs the bait shop?
