“People went to the polls and voted during World War I. They went to the polls and voted during World War II. We can safely go to the polls and vote during Covid-19.”

Part of his Arizona speech

The facts produce the exact opposite conclusion from the one Trump reaches. All the Americans who were in danger from those wars voted by mail! Therefore, following that example, all Americans in danger from COVID should vote by mail.

  1. Irish Times – Fintan O’Toole:
Donald Trump has destroyed the country he promised to make great again Over more than two centuries, the United States has stirred a very wide range of feelings in the rest of the world: love and hatred, fear and hope, envy and contempt, awe and anger. But there is one emotion that has never been directed towards the US until now: pity.
However bad things are for most other rich democracies, it is hard not to feel sorry for Americans. Most of them did not vote for Donald Trump in 2016. Yet they are locked down with a malignant narcissist who, instead of protecting his people from Covid-19, has amplified its lethality.
The country Trump promised to make great again has never in its history seemed so pitiful.

  2. Indy said: “His [Trump’s] goose is cooked, and he knows it.”

I very much want to believe that too, Indy, but as Tanner (I think) pointed out elsewhere, his approval rating is still a bit over 40%. I don’t understand that, but I can’t argue with it either. He is apparently still dangerous.

I also think that what Trump knows and reality are two vastly different things, with very few points of contact.

BTW, what is a “two rate hooker”? I have not heard the phrase before, and I like to keep up on current idioms. Thanks in advance!

    1. Should have used ‘second rate’ there, thought I changed that. 😛

His thoughts are pretty tired and worn now. He running the same tired lines over and over again – except this time he’s had four years to do what he wanted to do essentially, and clearly is a complete failure. How is going to prostitute the same song and dance from 5 years ago now, which is what he’s trying to do. He can make excuses about Tulsa for example, but that’s a pretty good indicator of the general exuberance of his base.

And I’m not sure what the approval rate will do at this point. It’s not as if any landslide election goes much lower than that rate. McGovern won 37.5% of the vote in 1972, and Mondale 40.6% while both only winning one state and DC. Trump could have that exact rate vote for him, and get completely destroyed in the election.

There are some good columns on Politico about this, but there is a real balance shift here now. Trump has no idea how to attack another older fairly moderate white man, nothing is sticking to Biden. Also, any apathy to not like Trump, but not go out and vote for Clinton is non existent this time around.

I wish it was next month, instead of 4 months out, but as everything gets closer – anything that would possibly give him the benefit of the doubt is trending opposite of him and getting worse right now. The best way to play the game now for Biden is to not play it.

      1. Thanks, Indy! With regards to your thoughts about Trump, I try to avoid thinking that I understand how other people think, because I usually don’t. I used to assume that lots of people were more or less like me. The depth of support for Trump and for the Republican Party as it currently is has been very eye-opening for me about that.

I also think that someone who has so many self-inflicted disasters to his credit must have a very powerful ability to believe whatever he wants to believe in order to keep on going, but that is making assumptions about Trump’s mentality again.

I agree with your thoughts about what is good strategy for Biden.

        1. It’s not even Trump really, there’s a certain percentage of people who given the most batshit, insane option will choose to vote for it. You could have a person that someone is dedicated to vote for and becomes so entrenched in their stance, no matter what that person does, they will then warp every possible objective truth outside of that individual or concept to fit that worldview.

I don’t pretend to know what drives these people either. I’ve had short term jobs with experienced teachers long ago, all with college educations, would grade standardized tests for grade school students and sit at the table and preach to me about how we’re in end times and the book of revelation and stuff.

You could point 100 other things out in that person’s lives with the same exact scenario and analogy they take the logical answer for, but that 101st one, its just crazy town. I’ll never understand it. An anti-vaccer is willing to let their kid die from disease and try essentials oils and all this crazy shit, but at the same time will go pick up some nutritional supplement not regulated by the FDA, buy some homeopathic supplement that is nothing but sugar pills or filtered water, eat some ultra processed food out of a plant, drink bottled water with a ton of microplastics – but choose this and ONLY this, very ODD thing to die on a hill for.

I guess it comes down to George Carlin’s bit on how stupid the average person is, and that half of the people are more stupid than that. In his words, fucking stupid, full of shit, and fucking nuts is a nice collective group for much of society.

  3. His goose is cooked, and he knows it. The guy is like a beyond tired standup act, hoping to replay his go to for the trillionth time and get some kind of response. He’s a cheap two rate hooker at a sleezy backwoods bar trying to relive the past.

Biden is utterly destroying him in the polls now. And before people say ‘well 2016 showed they don’t mean anything!’ – he’s down far, far beyond any point in the past. In fact, he has the biggest lead since Clinton in 1996 and the only candidate with greater than 50% nationally since Nixon in 72 and Reagan in 84 – may want to check the results out on those. All while the economy, civil unrest, and the pandemic are trending in the toilet and getting worse.

Biden almost would have to try to fuck this one up at this point. Don’t do rallies, don’t do debates, just let Trump have an anger fit and let him and his supporters fall into the pit of hell they’ve built for themselves.

  4. Well, Trump is not as smart as he thinks he is by a very, very, very wide margin. That over-estimation causes him to make big mistakes. He is ignorant as well. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine.

  5. Everyone knows that Panzer attacks were a serious threat at the voting booths during WWII. I remember reading about the reports of a blitzkrieg in Canton Ohio on Election Day 1944, as well as Stuka dive-bombing attacks in Des Moines. Voting was fraught with strife!

Silly question, but is Trump *really* this stupid, or does he just not care? Of course, the answer is most likely a little from Column A and a little from Column B.

  6. He’s pounding the table about this so if he loses by a close margin in any state that would swing it, he can claim that it’s fraudulent.

    1. When you said “pounding the table”, I thought you were talking about Louis Gohmert’s BS antics recently. I saw the video via Fark.com
