Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died, aged 87

Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”

  1. The loss of such an excellent person and such an outstanding judge should be a cause of grief to all good people. We were so very fortunate that she willing and able to serve the public so ably for so long.

It is a sign of the strain that Trump and Trumpism have placed on my mind that that was not my first thought.

    1. No but it was her last thought, even to her grave she said she wanted to wait for a new President before choosing her replacement. So even as she was fighting cancer, her mind was on the future, fairness, and justice like it always was.

That’s a true hero, and a legend. Not a scum sucking piece of shit like Trump or McConnell, who will bust Hell wide open after they go, if such a thing exists.

        1. Well, gosh, Ryan, you should have told the Republicans that back when they would not even give Obama’s nominee a hearing, because damned if they were going to let the President the people had elected nominate a justice! (I hope I am not doing you an injustice. What was your opinion about that?)

          1. The allegations against Kavanaugh is the single greatest reason I believe Trump will nominate a woman. I don’t know if the allegations against Kavanaugh were true or not. But I have no doubt that if Trump were to nominate another man, similar allegations will be made. I think the most likely nominee will be Amy Coney Barret because she became a conservative favorite when Diane Feinstein and other democratic senators on the judiciary committee seemed to argue (then law professor) Barret was too devout a Catholic at her hearing for the Court of Appeals. Feinstein said while questioning Barret: “I think in your case, professor, when you read your speeches, the conclusion one draws is that the dogma lives loudly within you, and that’s of concern.” This was seen as inappropriate, even by many on the left, because the Constitution bans religious tests for public office. I am not sure what sins Barret committed in high school, but they better have been mortal rather than venial if they are going to derail the confirmation of a mother of 7.

  2. Oh dear god. We do not want to take the devil as our example, but there is no way in hell the Republicans are putting another judge on the Supreme Court now. If the Dems let that happen, I want to move to wherever Tanner lives.

    1. I don’t see how the Democrats could stop Trump from nominating and the Senate from confirming someone to RBG’s seat on the Court. I think Trump will announce the nominee (probably Amy Coney Barrett) within a week, though hopefully he will wait until after RBG’s funeral. Because Harry Reid decided to eliminate the filibuster for judicial nominees, thus inviting the Republicans to extend it to Supreme Court nominees, I think they will not be able to stop a confirmation. It could hurt Trump’s reelection chances in 2 ways. First, the left will be extremely angry and energized. The right may become energized in response, but I think advantage Dems. Second, conservatives that hate Trump but care about the courts, especially The Court may feel much more comfortable voting against Trump with a 6 – 3 conservative majority. I know I will. But it looks like Biden has the lead right now, so an earth shattering event like this may change things in unexpected ways.

I am truly sorry that Justice Ginsberg passed away and her friends and family have my sympathies. The way the campaign is about to get even nastier truly depresses me. But I do want a 6 – 3 conservative majority on the Court, so I think Trump should nominate someone and McConnell should get them confirmed even if the GOP loses the Senate as a result. My biggest concern though is that the Dems may decide to pack the Court even if that requires eliminating the filibuster all together. Though I am sure the Dems would regret such an action because they will of course be in the minority again someday. They must regret the loss of the judicial filibuster today.

      1. Pull a Gingrich and threaten to shut down the government? Nah, that backfired when Newt did it. Try to find two Republican senators that still have souls? OK, I knew that was stupid before I finished typing it. Anybody else got anything?

        1. I say let the Deep South cede like they always wanted, vote the US Territories of Samoa, Guam, Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and District of Columbia in to replace them. Allow free passage to those who wish to move to either place and let them have their own economies and voting.

We’ll see who wins out on that deal. Choose to treat people with respect and equality backed by liberal states economies like California and New York with fair wages, or go keep your racism and false reality and bullshit ideas down where it belongs and enjoy the $5 an hour and $2000 doctor visit bill from trickle down econ at its finest.

I’m tired of dealing with these bullshit lunatics, they can go cede in Trumperica and then everyone else can build the wall around them.

          1. And as a bonus, it would make Putin very, very happy! Trump’s been working like a switch engine to do that since before his first day in office.

      2. “Conservatives that hate Trump but care about the courts, especially The Court may feel much more comfortable voting against Trump with a 6 – 3 conservative majority. I know I will.” .. Absolutely. That was my first thought too. An additional conservative justice prevents the Court from any more law-making of the let’s-just-enact-into-law-our-political-preferences kind for at least a while. Maybe a decade. And displacing Trump from the White House prevents — or makes hugely unlikely — the kind of Executive Branch craziness where nuclear weapons and genuine madness are involved.
